The Top 10 Reasons for Divorce

Posted on July 21, 2017

The Top 10 Reasons for Divorce Marriage is difficult. It takes a lot of hard work to make a relationship last for the rest of your life. Most people do enter a marriage thinking that one day soon they will face a divorce. However, the statistics show that nearly 50% of all marriages in the U.S. will end in divorce. While every relationship is different, there are some common themes. After all, we aren’t that different. Here are the top ten reasons for divorce.

  1. Infidelity

One of the most common reasons for divorce is cheating. One partner cheating often ends a relationship. The reasons that people cheat aren’t always so cut and dry. Anger and resentment are often the core reasons for one spouse cheating on the other. Infidelity leads to the loss of trust, pain, and anger. Once the trust in a relationship is broken, it is difficult to restore.

  2. Money

Money is the root of all evil, or so they say. Differences in spending habits, financial goals and one spouse making more money than the other can put a significant strain on a marriage. Not having enough money or coming into a large amount of money could also strain the marriage. Money effects everything. Money and stress often go hand in hand, and this can cause difficult times for marriage.

  3. Lack of Communication

Effectively communicating is an integral part of any relationship. One of the many reasons for divorce is the breakdown in communication between both spouses. Lacking communication can lead to repeating mistakes. It is important to communicate with your spouse without yelling or making nasty comments. When problems present themselves in your relationship, it is best to calmly and thoroughly express yourself. If you spot a problem with communicating it is possible to fix before your marriage ends in divorce.

  4. Constant Arguing

Arguing is draining on both the marriage as well as the individuals involved. This problem ties directly into to effective communication. Repeating the same arguments over and over again is a sign of poor communication. Everyone wants to have their concerns taken into consideration. If one spouse feels that the other isn’t hearing their concerns, it could lead to a divorce.

  5. Weight Gain or Disabilities

Changes in physical appearance or ability can cause strain on your marriage. We all expect our spouse to love us no matter what. However, this isn’t always the case. People use superficial reasons for divorce more often than you may think. Caring for a spouse that becomes disabled during the marriage may be more than someone is willing to do.

  6. Lack of Intimacy

Lack of intimacy is a real issue when it comes to relationships. It can leave one, or both parties are feeling like they are living with a roommate instead of a spouse. Intimacy doesn’t necessarily mean sex. There are other types of physical and emotional intimacy that people need in a healthy relationship. Spending time with your spouse, cuddling, and sharing your feelings can help you maintain your relationship.

  7. Unrealistic Expectations

Many people think that marriage should be effortless before entering into the lifelong commitment. Coming into a marriage with high expectations is a great way to set yourself up for failure. Also, bringing experiences from previous relationships into your new ones can cause a great strain on the relationship.

  8. Lack of Equality

When one partner feels like they have to take on more responsibility in the marriage, they tend to feel like they don’t have an equal partner. Likewise, if one partner feels like they can contribute more but aren’t given a chance, this can lead to a breakdown of the marriage. Each couple must strike a balance and share the responsibilities of their daily lives.

  9. Abuse

One of the worst reasons for divorce is abuse by one or both spouses. Physical and emotional abuse cause people to flee marriages faster than any other issue. No one should tolerate abuse, and if you are currently in this type of situation, you should remove yourself as quickly as possible.

  10. Not Being Prepared

This is one of the common reasons for divorce amongst young people. Those who decide to get married in the early to mid 20’s are much more likely not to be prepared.
